The Hôtel de Saint-Aignan was designed by architect Pierre Le Muet and built between 1645 and 1650.

The hotel was commissioned by Claude de Mesmes, Comte d'Avaux, negotiator of the Peace of Westphalia and Superintendent of Finances. It was then extended for Paul de Beauvillier, governor of Louis XIV's grandsons, who was also Colbert's son-in-law. Later, Michel-Étienne Turgot and his son Anne, future minister to Louis XVI, lived in the hotel.

The courtyard façade is remarkable for its colossal Corinthian pilasters framing large windows. What's more, the left side is clad with false windows, which were once Philippe Auguste's ramparts.
