Jardin de l'Hôtel-Lamoignon - Mark-Ashton

This garden opened in 1969.

The Jardin de l'Hôtel-Lamoignon - Mark-Ashton, or Jardin de la Bibliothèque-Historique, is a public garden located rue des Francs-Bourgeois in Paris.

The Hôtel Lamoignon was built in 1559 by Philippe Delorme, then remodeled and enlarged for the d'Angoulême family.
Between 1688 and 1774, it belonged to the Lamoignon family, whose name it retains. In the 19th century, Alphonse Daudet lived in the building, which was then transformed into a factory and stores. The municipality bought it in 1928 and restored it to house the Bibliothèque historique de la Ville de Paris in 1969. Its garden is now a public square.

Since 2018, this garden has paid tribute to gay rights activist Mark Ashton. Born in 1960, Mark Ashton was a member of the Communist Party of Great Britain, and was convinced that different causes should unite: with his friend Mike Jackson, he founded the support group Lesbians and Gays support the Miners to help striking miners.
This movement helped to advance LGBT issues, encouraging unions to support the cause of equal rights. Mark Ashton died of AIDS in 1987.
