Temple Square
This square was opened in 1857
In the 18th century, the Temple enclosure housed the knights of the Order of the Templars, a feared financial and political power that was dissolved in 1312. The palace, then assigned to the Order of Malta, was seized as national property during the French Revolution: now a prison, the Tour du Temple was the last home of Louis XVI and the Dauphin Louis XVII. Later used as a convent and barracks, it was demolished in 1808. The current garden was laid out by Jean-Charles Adolphe Alfand during Haussmann's reign.
The horse chestnut trees recall the memory of Paris' first chestnut tree: imported from Constantinople, it was planted in l'enclos du Temple in 1615 by Bachelier.
